Electrical Technician
Position Summary
The Electrical Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing complex industrial electrical systems, control panels, high-voltage equipment, and automated machinery. The role demands an expert diagnostic mind to minimize technical downtime and keep heavy logistics and handling equipment operating safely and at peak efficiency.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Perform routine maintenance and emergency repairs on three-phase power distribution systems, electric motors, generators, transformers, and industrial lighting.
- Read, interpret, and update electrical blueprints, wiring diagrams, and schematic drawings to quickly diagnose and isolate complex electrical faults.
- Inspect, program, and repair programmable logic controllers (PLCs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), and automated relay logic systems.
- Assist in the overhaul and installation of complex electrical systems on heavy machinery, including quay cranes, container handlers, and marine vessels.
- Conduct insulation resistance tests, grounding checks, and circuit load testing. Ensure all works comply with EPRA codes and local OSHA standards under Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO).
- Monitor and report on electrical system efficiencies and consumption anomalies, and maintain accurate maintenance and safety logs.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Diploma or Higher National Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Power Option) or a closely related technical field.
- Active registration/licensing by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) (minimum Class C2 or higher preferred).
- Valid registration as a Technician with the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) for Diploma holders. Membership with the National Construction Authority (NCA) is an added advantage.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of hands-on experience as an industrial electrician, preferably within heavy industry, a marine port, or terminal depot.
- Prior experience working on electrical infrastructure, gantry power grids, or shore-power systems within Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) installations is a distinct advantage.
- Mastery of PLC automation and diagnostic tools; solid ICT skills.
- Full physical agility to work at heights or in confined spaces.
