Signaler / Banksman
Position Summary
The Signaler acts as the critical “eyes and ears” on the ground, directing the safe, efficient, and precise movement of heavy lifting equipment, quay cranes, and vessels. By providing clear, standardized hand signals and radio instructions, the Signaler bridges the visual gap between machine operators and their surroundings, ensuring zero-accident cargo handling and docking operations.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Guide Quay Crane operators, Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) operators, and Mobile Harbor Crane operators during the loading, discharging, and stacking of containers and bulk cargo.
- Assist in directing ships, tugboats, and marine vessels safely into berths using standard marine signaling procedures.
- Identify potential blind spots, hazards, or obstructions in the operational path and signal immediate stop actions to prevent accidents or property damage.
- Coordinate with heavy equipment operators prior to lifting cycles to establish weight parameters, travel paths, and communication frequencies.
- Maintain flawless, real-time verbal communication via two-way VHF radios alongside universally recognized standard hand signals.
- Strictly enforce Port Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) policies and complete PPE compliance within the active handling zone.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or equivalent.
- Certified training in Lifting Operations, Banksman/Signaling, or Rigging from a recognized maritime or industrial training institution.
- Minimum of 3 years of active experience as a Signaler or Banksman in a high-volume marine terminal or port facility. Direct operational experience within Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) installations or terminals is a distinct advantage.
- Complete mastery of international standard hand signals (BS 7121 / OSHA standards) and marine radio communication protocols.
- Impeccable vision (including color perception), excellent depth perception, clear speech, and the physical stamina to work outdoors across 24/7 shift rotations.
