Car Carrier Driver (Heavy Commercial Vehicle)
Position Summary
The Car Carrier Driver is responsible for the safe, secure, and long-haul transportation of multiple motor vehicles (saloon cars, SUVs, and light commercials) from ports and manufacturing hubs to dealerships and inland depots. This highly specialized driving role requires mastering the complex hydraulic ramp systems of multi-car trailers, calculating strict height clearances, and maintaining a flawless transit safety record.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Safely operate heavy-duty articulated car carrier trucks over long distances, adhering strictly to national speed limits and road safety regulations.
- Manually drive, position, and secure vehicles onto the carrier’s upper and lower hydraulic decks, operating hydraulic ramps with precision.
- Ensure every loaded vehicle is secured using specialized soft wheel straps, chocks, and nets to guarantee zero damage or movement during transit.
- Conduct rigorous visual inspections of loaded cargo for pre-existing scratches, dents, or defects, recording findings clearly on the bill of lading.
- Plan transit routes meticulously, accounting for bridge heights, low-hanging overhead wires, and weight restrictions unique to car carriers.
- Perform mandatory pre-trip daily inspections of truck and trailer units (air brakes, tire pressure, coupling mechanisms, and hydraulic fluid levels).
Qualifications & Requirements
- Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or equivalent.
- Valid NTSA Category CE smart driving license (formerly Class BCE) explicitly authorized for heavy articulated trucks and semi-trailers.
- Minimum of 5 years of active experience driving heavy commercial trailers, with at least 3 years specializing specifically in multi-car carrier operations.
- Extensive experience picking up vehicle cargo directly from Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) installations or handling port clearing procedures is a distinct advantage.
- Valid Professional Driver Check / Defensive Driving Certification (e.g., from AA Kenya or specialized OEMs like Scania/Isuzu) is highly desirable.
- Valid Certificate of Good Conduct, clean NTSA traffic profile, high physical and medical fitness , and basic IT skills.
