Empty Container Handler (ECH) Operator
Position Summary
The Empty Container Handler Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and precise maneuvering, stacking, loading, and offloading of empty shipping containers within the yard. The ideal candidate must possess exceptional spatial awareness, a stellar safety record, and the technical expertise required to operate heavy-capacity container handling equipment in a fast-paced setting.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Safely operate Empty Container Handlers (side-loaders and top-loaders) to lift, move, and stack empty containers up to 7-8 tiers high, ensuring maximum yard space utilization.
- Execute the timely loading and offloading of empty containers from trucks, trailers, and rail wagons in accordance with operational work orders.
- Conduct mandatory daily pre-shift and post-shift checklist inspections of machinery (fluid levels, brakes, hydraulics, and spreader twist-locks), reporting defects immediately.
- Ensure containers are stacked accurately according to size, type, shipping line, and status (clean/damaged) as directed by the yard planning system.
- Strictly adhere to port safety regulations, Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) guidelines, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to prevent property damage.
- Maintain constant and clear radio communication with yard marshals, clerks, and supervisors to optimize truck turnaround times.
Qualifications & Requirements
- KCSE D (plain) or its recognized equivalent.
- Valid NTSA driving license of class B, C, E with an accident-free profile.
- Valid Forklift Operator Certification/License.
- Minimum of 3 years of continuous experience actively operating Empty Container Handlers. Experience within Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) installations or terminals is a distinct advantage.
- Thorough knowledge of container terminal operations, container handling attachment mechanisms (spreaders, twist-locks), basic mechanical troubleshooting, and basic Microsoft applications.
- Must be physically and medically fit to work under pressure and meet strict vessel/truck turnaround deadlines.
