Mechanical Technician
Position Summary
The Mechanical Technician is responsible for ensuring maximum operational reliability of heavy logistics equipment, plant machinery, and industrial systems. The role demands an expert in precision diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and rapid breakdown repair of internal combustion engines, complex transmission systems, and advanced hydraulics to completely minimize operational downtime.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Execute routine, scheduled, and emergency mechanical maintenance on heavy mobile equipment (such as container handlers, reach stackers, heavy trucks) and fixed plant machinery.
- Inspect, troubleshoot, rebuild, and repair high-pressure hydraulic pumps, cylinders, valves, control blocks, and pneumatic braking systems.
- Perform technical diagnostics, fine-tuning, and full mechanical overhauls on heavy-duty diesel engines (e.g., Cummins, Volvo, Caterpillar) and automatic/powershift transmissions.
- Conduct precise mechanical alignment, component coupling, bearing replacements, and structural fitting of moving machinery parts.
- Perform minor structural modifications, oxy-acetylene cutting, and arc welding pairs on heavy equipment chassis or attachments when required.
- Strictly adhere to workplace safety protocols, including Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO), proper hazardous waste disposal (used oils, filters), and immaculate maintenance logging.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Diploma or Higher National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (Plant/Production Option), Automotive Engineering, or a highly related technical field. (Grade 1/2 Trade Test with extensive experience will also be considered).
- Active registration as a Technician with the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) for Diploma holders.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of active, hands-on experience as an industrial mechanical technician or heavy plant mechanic within a reputable organization.
- Prior experience maintaining heavy material handling equipment or marine auxiliary systems within Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) installations or busy Container Freight Stations (CFS) is a distinct advantage.
- Complete mastery of hydraulic circuit schematics, precision measuring tools (micrometers, dial indicators), and modern electronic diagnostic scan tools.
- Strong teamwork capacity to work alongside Electrical Technicians on complex electro-hydraulic systems; physical stamina to manage cramped mechanical bays or outdoor field repairs.
